The Sultanate of Oman and France have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to cooperate on the development of the proposed Muscat Metro, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s efforts to modernize urban mobility under Oman Vision 2040.
The agreement, covering logistics, ports, and the Muscat Metro project, was signed between Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology and France’s Ministry of Transport. The signing formed part of a wider package of 12 agreements and declarations of intent witnessed by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, may Allah protect him, and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.
The Muscat Metro is planned as a modern mass transit network designed to ease traffic congestion, improve connectivity, and support sustainable urban development across the capital. The first phase of the project will extend approximately 55 kilometres, linking Sultan Haitham City to Ruwi, and passing through key urban nodes including Muscat International Airport, Ghala, and Al Khuwair. The network will comprise around 42 stations, including major interchange hubs.
A strategically significant station is planned in the Airport Heights corridor, positioned to directly serve the Muscat Hills masterplan. This includes immediate proximity to Muscat Hills Golf Club and The Boulevard by Muscat Hills, located just four minutes away, further reinforcing the district’s role within the capital’s emerging urban growth corridor.
The inclusion of this station strengthens the long-term connectivity of Muscat Hills within Muscat’s evolving infrastructure framework, linking residential, commercial, and lifestyle destinations into a single integrated network.
